wow Tricia, what a great idea! It is difficult to know where to start and find out if an idea is a service people want.

So, what’s the next step? Who do you (or someone else reading this) know that could help you with a next step.

I would be good offering a personal and sensitive service to older people who would like a companion for a few hours a week for outings, visits, the odd cuppa or games for mental stimulation.

What is stopping me? The insurance costs, wondering if there is a demand for such a service, the possibility that people might expect personal care, cleaning and weekly shopping to be within my remit. I hold basic social care qualifications, otherwise I rely on the University of Life to see me through. I have no idea if anyone would pay for such service. I would not want to make a lot of money but I cannot do it as a volunteer because of the insurance and cost of any outings or activities etc.

I believe that older people can have more interesting lives when given the right sort of support, even when they need to drop previous hobbies and activities through debilitation. Having personal time to be and to have someone’s attention is a special comodity that few have.

At some stage in their lives, everyone has a great idea. Putting into words just how great that idea is can sometimes make or break the idea itself. The more help you get, then the better the chance that the idea becomes a reality. My idea is now a reality and without people like Dawn, the path at times can be a rather lonely one to tread. Words are powerful, but choose the right ones wisely.
