Tips Tuesday – What to Write in a Newsletter

Better Blog PostsMore Than 10 Ideas for Newsletter Content

I know it can be difficult to think of interesting content for your own newsletter – not least because we often underestimate how much we know and so how much of what we know will be interesting to other people… did you follow that?

I thought I’d list a few ideas to help anyone struggling for inspiration, for anyone trying to work out what to write in a newsletter.

Ah, and here’s a big difference between the online world and the print world – you can’t cut this out and keep it… but you can bookmark it.

More Than 10 Ideas for Newsletter Content

  1. Take a theme inspired by the time of year – the season, celebration or festival coming up (Summer, Winter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Bank Holiday, etc.) and explain how your knowledge relates to that. Write about how the time of year affects your industry.
  2. Add short descriptions of a few blog posts – with a link so that readers can read more if they’re interested.
  3. Find and describe a recent, relevant news story and give your opinion.
  4. Include links to different networks where your readers can connect with you (eg. Linked In, a local networking group, ecademy, etc.)
  5. Link to specific elements in previous newsletters.
  6. Write about special offers or promotions.
  7. A survey or questionnaire – people like answering questions!
  8. Include a puzzle or a game (or link to an online one).
  9. Humour’s allowed :-)
  10. Find a quotation and say why it matters.
  11. Include an article from a guest (a colleague or business partner or supplier or customer).

You could also add details of where people could actually meet you – the events you’re going to attend – and invite them to speak to you, to say ‘hello’ and shake your hand.

Of course, if you’re still not inspired then I might know someone who could write your newsletter for you – someone like me! Or even me – contact me, Dawn Brewer for a quote.

Hi Dawn,

Great post – I am in the middle of putting together a newsletter at the moment, and particularly like the idea of having a guest article – I shall have a word with my builder and see if she will write one.

Good idea Katrina. It’s amazing how much builders know and even the simplest tips can be helpful to readers… Like how to stop rubbish blowing in under the garage doors!
