Spelling Matters: There Their They’re
When you consider that your website is a ‘shop window’ that potential customers will see, it helps to make sure that your spellings and use of grammar are up to the job!
For instance, simple, every-day words such as: there, their and they’re – all sound the same but each has its own meaning and is spelt differently. Words that do this are called ‘homophones’ but we don’t need to get too grammatical, just watch those spellings!
Using There
The best way is for me to show examples in sentences, for instance, ‘there’ might be used as:
- Is there a meeting in there? (There you go, two for the price of one!)
- There was too much traffic for them to get there on time.
- Is the station just over there?
As you can see, it’s often used in a directional context, in questions and in statements too.
Using Their
Now, let’s look at ‘their’ – so often overlooked, yet all it wants is to belong. Yes, that’s right, ‘their’ is the indication that something belongs – to a group. For instance,
- She went to join their group at the table
- The computer belonged to their I.T. club
- Their pens worked quickly to make notes of all that was said at the meeting
Using They’re
As for ‘they’re’ this is simply a shortened form of ‘they are’ but sounds much the same as the others.
We might use this as follows:
- They’re going to follow us to the meeting.
- Did you say they’re coming too?
- I hope they’re going to be there. (Note the two different uses in this sentence!)
Well hopefully, there will be many more impressed customers looking at your site and they’re likely to get in touch with you for their requirements!
